Discrimination, a plague?

What is discrimination? It’s the action of separating someone from the rest of the population and being ruder with him. The majority of the time, those persons, doesn’t deserve it. It happened because the other persons are jealous, scared or those people are a visible minority so they can be easily put out of the society. In the movie Phenomenon, the discrimination took a lot of place in the life of George Malley because since he has seen the light in the sky, his intellectuals faculties developed and his intelligence grew each day. He also has powers. Because it was scary and he was not anymore like everyone, George was no more rejected.

Change is inevitable. Our society is evolving and sometimes, those movements in the life of peoples scared them. They are not familiarizing to those new things and they don’t know what it is, so it makes them scared. So, everyone goes away from those persons because they are different, but in reality they are the same. George Malley were still the same guy except that his IQ grew a lot, he knew more things, learned quicker and had super power. His personality and his values did not change, the women, he loved, was the same before and after he sees the light.

Our society is not perfect. Too often, we judge others without really knowing how they are and what happens to them. We must take the time to know someone before accept him like a friend or ignore him. It happens so many times that a bad reputation or a first judgment that was erroneous broke a relation before it even starts. The good point is that we can easily change this habit and become a better citizen each day by trying to know the others persons better to help the relationships.

By the end of the movie, George goes at the books exposition to prove to the world that he was a normal human and they don’t have any reason to be scared of him. The only thing that makes him different than the others was his superior intelligence. In the bottom of his heart, he only wanted, to help the rest of the population. George hopes that if they know him better they will realize who he really is.

To conclude, more it changes, more it’s the same. The things that we don’t know or things that are different than the normal are so many times subject of discrimination. Discrimination is their and it will continue until everyone choose to make a difference. It’s maybe never going to happen so we will have to live with it. Keep up in mind that nobody is perfect so we always can improve our relationship and put away the discrimination.

Belonging to a nation

The value of a man should be seen in what he gives and not in what he is able to receive.
-Albert Einstein

A myth is so powerful because it inspired us or it scared us. Two emotions, one goal: make things changes. If we look around, each society has their heroes: American has Chuck Norris, Abraham Lincoln, England has Wolf, Japan has Jackie Chan, and France has Napoleon. Those guys have done incredible things and those actions make them being more popular. They‘re a part of history and we’re going to remember them for many years. But, how these myths are used to create the idea or the feeling of belonging to a nation? If we look in the story: The handsomest drowned man in the world: A tale for children by Gabriel Gracía Márquez, Esteban who where dead when peoples find him on the beach arrived to change everyone. In the story, they bring him to their village and they wash him, they gave him new clothes and they prepare his funerals. For this important day, the entire village were present and they make their village splendid to honour him. In my point of view, myth like this one can create the sentiment of attachment to a nation. The story creates the feeling of belonging to a nation and I will explain you why.

First of all, we indentify us to heroes because their actions inspired us and we dream to be like them. They are powerful, beautiful, they make things change even if no one trusts in them at the beginning and they always win. When the women sea him, they said: “Even though they were looking at him there was no room for him in their imagination.” This mean how beautiful he where, event in their dreams they can’t imagine a man as beautiful as him. Also, they try to imagine his life: “They thought that he would have had so much authority that he could have drawn fish out of the sea simply by calling their names and that he would have put so much work into his land that springs would have burst forth from among the rocks so that he would have been able to plant flowers on the cliffs.” The women imagine the life of Esteban and how great this man was. A hero is also someone who accepts the difficulties of life with courage and without crying. Even if no one likes him, he continued to give his 110% for others. As said in the text, the life of Esteban where not suppose to be easy. “They could see him in life, condemned to going through doors sideways, cracking his head on crossbeams, remaining on his feet during visits, not knowing what to do with his soft, pink, sea lion hands while the lady of the house looked for her most resistant chair and begged him, frightened to death, sit here, Esteban, please, and he, leaning against the wall, smiling, don't bother, ma'am, I'm fine where I am, his heels raw and his back roasted from having done the same thing so many times whenever he paid a visit, don't bother, ma'am, I'm fine where I am, just to avoid the embarrassment of breaking up the chair, and never knowing perhaps that the ones who said don't go, Esteban, at least wait till the coffee's ready, were the ones who later on would whisper the big boob finally left, how nice, the handsome fool has gone.” All of this made him being a hero for the village and the population how wants to honor his memory works to transformed the village for Esteban. The myth of this man changes all of them. This is the power of myth.!

This text can also represent real life. If we look at Obama, everyone thought he will be the guy who saved the United States. His discourse inspired everyone and we put a lot of hope in him. Unfortunately, he is only a man and he makes the best he can but he were unable to escape his country from the recession. But in the end, the USA will pass over his economic problems. As in the story, peoples trust those two men at all so they did things for them. In the end they realise that things have change because they puts all their energies together to accomplish a project or goes out of a problem.

To conclude, a myth is enough powerful to change peoples. If we recognize ourselves in the story or the ideas are the same of our worth. A myth like “The handsomest drowned man in the world” inspired peoples to be more unify. So, this myths were use to create the idea or the feeling to belonging to a nation. The story gives to the readers the sensation of being invincible when the hero (Esteban) is there.

The most important myth in Quebec

Everyone from Quebec or even Canada knows the bridge of Quebec. It’s a part of our pride; a part of the landscape and of our road. As we know, during its construction, many accidents happened and approximately 86 person died. To be able to finish the bridge without killing other people, an engineer accept a pact with the devil. He promise to the foreman than nobody will die on the bridge until the end of his construction but he will take the soul of the first person who will go on it.

The foreman, who was still traumatized by the dead of the workers, accepted the deal. Since this day, the construction of the bridge ends without troubles; until the time where the devil came to be pay. The supervisor realizes his mistake so he tried to save the life of the unfortunate person who where suppose to be the first one to cross the bridge. He took a black cat that near from him and he throws it on the devil that was waiting. The two of them disappeared and we only found some black hair full of blood.

For me, this myth is one of the most important in Quebec because the bridge is a part of our lives. We see it and use it many times in our life. It is unique, a part of the Quebecor genius, and also a record Guinness. For me, when I cross over it, I don’t really thought about this myth but more about his construction, his history, and the people that died to let this project be a reality. Events happened and myths or legends are here to let us remember those events even if it’s 100 years later.

To conclude, this myth is so important because the bridge is a part of our road, of our city and of our life.

The home of Cars; the realisation of a dream...

The popularity of the Ford model T “put the America on the wheels”. It’s also because of the way that Henry Ford’s company built their automobile. The assembly lines make a revolution in the way to produce things. It was quicker and cost less, all the ingredients were present to make the model T a success! We can say that Ford is the house of this change, because they’ve start the movement and it still continue today.

The Ford model T was the first car that was produce with new method like assembly lines. It explains why it was the first affordable automobile that the majority of the population were able to buy. For example, in 1909, that car cost 850$ (it means 20 191$ today) and the competition offer their car at the ridiculous price of 2000$ to 3000$ (47 274$-70 911$ today). In 1920, the price of model T were 290$ (3 191$ today) this reduction of the price is explain by the increasing of the efficiencies of the assembly lines techniques and volume of the production. At this time, the only competitor of Ford was Chrysler Corporation and they were far away behind because of their outrageous prices.

The motor of the model T had 4 cylinders that develop a phenomenal power of 20, 2 hp. It was enough to goes at a top speed of 40-45 miles an hour (64-72 km/h). For this time, it was an exploit to make cars as performing at this lower price.

Henry Ford said of this vehicle:

"I will build a car for the great multitude. It will be large enough for the family, but small enough for the individual to run and care for. It will be constructed of the best materials, by the best men to be hired, after the simplest designs that modern engineering can devise. But it will be low in price that no man making a good salary will be unable to own one - and enjoy with his family the blessing of hours of pleasure in God's great open spaces."
